There seems to be two camps on who the father of Joel Buffington is (1806-82). Now, don't get him mixed up with his grandfather Joel of Island fame. Abraham died bankrupt. In the property seizure after his death there is a Joel named as an hier at law. It would have helped if the papers identified his relationship to Abraham. There were also sons-inlaw and others named there too. However, a Joel never showed up on a census with Abraham and does not seem to have been on a census with Philip C. either. Also, it does not help that the courthouse in Gallatin county burned down three times.

Back to a Joel being named in the bankruptcy papers of Abraham. For a couple of hundred years the family was so fond of using the names Joel, Philip and Magdalena. Philip had a son named Joel and one named Phillip.
Abraham had a son named Phillip too. I am just wondering if Abraham and Philip C. both had a son named Joel. It is entirely possible. You would not believe the over use of that name along with Phillip and Magdalena.
To top it off. Those names do not even belong to the Buffington. They are all taken from the Fereer family of French immigrants that Thomas married into.

I have ask everybody who may even remotely know who the father of Joel was. Without result, I have even ask for a good theory if anyone had one.
Nobody knows. So if you every get an idea, please write to me.

From a letter I received in the 1980s

On the way out of Rusk I went by the "lost' cemetery on Jonathan Medford's headright about 21/2 miles northeast and was surprised to find a good marker or sign calling attention to the cemetery. When I came back through Lufkin, I called-our distant cousin and good friend, Elizabeth Jenkins, and she said that was put up by the Cherokee County Historical Commission at the insistence of herself and her cousin, Col. Jack Jenkins of San Antonio.

I don't know who is buried there; but it was handed down through generations that there are nine graves there marked only with sandstone. Jonathan and Sarah and James Evan Medford are buried there, One of the old slaves is also supposed to be buried there

From Charles :The MUNSELLE's buried in Oakwood Cemetery were buried in a section that has very few headstones. One of the earliest sections of the cemetery. So all I have picture wise is the general area and the front gate. I have the section and lot numbers.

Then on William Otis MUNSELLE he is in a different Cemetery ( Chapel Hill ) , I have the lots, & section pictures and the main entrance to the cemetery.
